Getting started
Your juices will be delivered to you the day before before you start your cleanse, so you’re ready to go when you wake up on day 1.
Start with lemon juice and warm water
This helps to stimulate your digestion as well as start the cleansing process as lemon juice is an excellent detoxifier.
There are six juices per day
- Drink them in their numbered order about 1-2 hours apart (we suggest 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm, but it’s really up to you)
- Drink a glass of water or herbal tea for every juice (aim for 1.5 – 2 litres over the course of the day)
- Drink your last juice at least 2 hours before bed
- If you’re very hungry in the morning, you can drink half of juice number 6 and save the other half for later. It has lots of protein and some good fat to help you start your day. A lot of people find this helpful and it’s not cheating.
- ‘Chew your juice’. Instead of gulping it down, swish each mouthful around in your mouth (called “chewing”) so it mixes with you saliva. The production of saliva starts the digestive process and will help you to absorb the maximum nutrients.
You can expect some detox symptoms
The good news is that our program is designed to minimise detox symptoms so you can get on with your normal life and routine (including light exercise). The intensity of detox symptoms you experience will depend on your cleanse level as well as how different the cleanse is from your normal diet (it stands to reason that if you eat and drink lots of, let’s call them “less good”, foods, then your detox symptoms will be greater).
Detox symptoms that may occur
- headaches
- lethargy
- temporary muscle aches
- dry mouth
- runny nose
- irritability (aka cranky pants)
- difficulty sleeping
- weakness
- cravings
- nausea
- constipation or diarrhea
- gas
Minimising detox symptoms
It’s easy to confuse detox symptoms with withdrawal symptoms, which is why we recommend you choose the right level for you and prepare for your cleanse. If you drink coffee regularly, you might experience a mild headache - you’ll just have to ride it out.
It can also really help to drink lots of water and herbal tea. Choose herbal teas that address particular symptoms:
- Stimulate digestion: (echinacea, ginger, licorice, peppermint, nutmeg)
- Stop hunger pains: (green tea, wheat grass)
- Expel gas: (chamomile, aniseed, fennel, ginger)
- Encourage bowel movement: (licorice, dandelion)
Elimination and the digestive system
You may find that you become constipated during your cleanse. This is not unusual and can be quite easily rectified by adding some natural fibre to the juices like slippery elm powder, LSA (a mix of ground linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds) or chia seeds.
This will act as a gentle, natural laxative. Simply add a tablespoon to each juice until you have a 'good movement'. Please remember that you are taking in much less fibre while cleansing so there isn't a lot to eliminate that way and you only need to do this if you are feeling constipated.
Maximise the benefits of your cleanse
There are some easy things that you can do to maximise the effects of your cleanse:
- Exfoliate or dry skin brush – your dead skin cells will start shedding during the cleanse so help them along by scrubbing or brushing. Your skin will glow.
- Get some exercise – feel doubly virtuous while you cleanse by hitting the gym to sweat out more of those toxins! (Don’t let the sweat dry on your skin, though, as you don’t want your skin to re-absorb it)
- Hit the sauna or steam room – another great way to speed up the cleanse process.
- Take a leaf out of the Scandinavians’ book and add a series of hot and cold showers to really get the blood and lymphatic fluid moving.
- Get a massage; if your masseuse is made aware that you’re cleansing and gently and slowly massages the liver, it will intensify the effects of your cleanse. The liver gets extremely busy during a cleanse and it’s conveniently located where we can reach it - applying some physical manipulation can assist in the detox process. You can even give yourself a massage using some massage oil or almond, olive or sesame oil. Use long strokes towards the heart on your limbs and a circular motion over your joints. Self massage can be very relaxing and nourishing. Give it a go.
- Treat yourself to some extra sleep. An extra hour or two sleep will make the world of difference and give your body extra time to regenerate overnight.
- Feed your soul: because you won’t be spending any time preparing meals or doing food shopping, you’ll likely find yourself with quite a bit more time. Use this time to feed your soul – read an inspiring book, reconnect with a friend or family, take a long walk, watch the sunset. You have a great opportunity to nourish both your body and your mind.
- Try yoga or tai chi - cleansing is a great time to do yoga, tai chi or pilates. All these are energy-building (“yin”) workouts that will help to increase and sustain your energy levels.
