Tried and Tested: The Juice Detox

Holly Enriquez, a 28-year-old producer, tried a five-day juice detox (yup, she ate nothing solid for five whole days). Did she cave into temptation? Read on to find out.

Detox tried: Urban Remedy Cleanse

My lifestyle

I'm pretty healthy generally. I go to the gym three or four times a week and eat loads fruit and vegies.

But I'm not without my vices; I can't survive a day without coffee or my sugar fix (and the odd glass of wine). I had also had a rather indulgent Christmas so when the chance to give my liver a little breather came along, I grabbed it.

What does the detox involve?

The Urban Remedy Cleanse lets you select either a one-, three- or five-day cleanse which involves drinking six glasses of juice a day. The juices have been developed by a nutritionist to contain adequate protein, carbs, good fats and vitamins and minerals. In a moment of bravery (or stupidity) I chose the five-day cleanse. The bottles turned up at my doorstep and the next day, it was on.

What claims does it make?

  • Eliminate nasty toxins from your system.
  • Revitalise and re-energise.
  • Jump-start a change to a healthier lifestyle.
  • Look better, feel better.

The detox

It wasn't easy, but it also wasn't as hard as I expected. The juices tasted quite pleasant (my fave was the "dinner" juice which contained ground nuts and coconut milk) and because I was drinking a juice every two hours, I didn't ever feel hungry or (too) deprived.

But by day three I did start to feel weak and tired and found it harder to concentrate at work. It also made going out nearly impossible (the Moonlight cinema just wasn't the same without a bottle of wine and nibbles), so I was confined to the house, taunted by the intoxicating smells from my housemate's take-out pizza. But I'm proud to say I made it!

The outcomes

I can't say that I felt "cleansed" after the detox but then again, perhaps I wasn't that "toxed up" in the first place. What I found most beneficial from this experience is a renewed appreciation of healthy, nutritious foods, as surprisingly, these are what I craved most during the cleanse.

Note to self: be kinder to your body in 2010! I also lost 1.5kg, which was a nice added bonus and am excited to report I can now fit onto my "skinny jeans".

Score: three out of five
